ASTM A554 TP316 Welded Mecanical Tubing are made from flat-rolled steel by an automatic welding process, without any filler metal addition. Heat analysis is performed so that the several grades of steel conform to the required chemical composition. ASTM A554 TP316 Square Tube and ASTM A554 TP316 Rectangular Tubing yield strength corresponding to a permanent offset of 0.2% of the gage length of the specimen or total extension of 0.5% of gage's length under load shall be determined. ASTM A554 TP316L Welded Mechanical Tubing made from flat-rolled steel by an automatic welding process without the addition of filler metal.

For ASME SA554 TP316L small diameter or thin walls, or both, where many drawing passes are required a carbon content of 0.040% maximum is necessary in grades MT-316 and MT-316L. ASTM A554 TP316L Small outside diameter tubes are defined as those less than 0.500 inch(12.7 mm) in outside diameter and light wall tubes as those less than 0.049 inch(1.24 mm) in average wall thickness. ASTM A554 TP316L specification covers as welded or cold-reduced mechanical tubing in sizes to 16 inch(406.4 mm) outside dimension and in wall thicknesses 0.020 inch(0.51 mm).
